Today I'm finally getting around, after a busy schedule (and being a little lazy I'll admit) to review the latest SCCW show. I had been looking forward to this show mainly for the Dome of Doom match that main evented this show. I'll get to that when I get to the main event but for now lets get underway and start at the beginning.
Opening- I enjoyed the opening. It set the show up, as the opening should, and i'm a big fan of the duo at the announce table. Gibson is a great former character to use as a play-by-play guy and the Eugene Ware character is just a hilarious heel color commentator. Probably the best one in PTC at this point.
Men On Wrestling- This segment was ok and had some funny lines but I didn't think it was overly funny and sometimes came off as somewhat lame and kind of forced.
Indebted To The Fear- I like the way that these two characters were able to take a poor situation, for them as wrestlers, and use it to gain something for themselves in the near future. Using the agreeing to referee later in the show in order to get their hands on a Strength In Numbers championship match was a brilliant idea. I like that.
Grudge Match- (Malloy vs. Searle) This was a great way to open the matches of the show. It was so well written, flowed really well, and had me interested from start to finish.
Also it was the first place I've seen the AT&T replay thing used and I'm going to say right now that I'm a HUGE FAN of this. I love the replay move. I love the very real, tv show, feel that it gives the results. I love the addition of this. That's awesome.
Great match up. Big props to Malloy for the W here.
One Step Ahead but Four Steps Behind- I'm not sure I really get the point of this segment, to be honest. I can't imagine why anyone, even if the character is designed to be nothing more than a jobber, who'd actually say they don't want to win. This whole segment just seemed like it was thrown together just to have something on the show.
The Super Secret Plan- I absolutely LOVED this segment. Loved it. So well done and anything that has Lane Stevens in it makes it immediately one of the most awesome things you'll ever see on a wrestling show.
I love the way that Nackedy came out and pretended he wanted to join Dead Mans Hand and he was going to try and screw it all up from with in. You get Lane out there throwing out classic lines like this one...
"Lane Stevens: I dunno, you seem so goddamn proud of yourself…figured you wanted to tell someone. I’m a good listener."
Then, to top that all off, you get one of the best returns EVER. Rhine returns to SCCW! Are you kidding me? I love this character and I had no idea that Nate was taking him back to SCCW. That was one of the best mark out moments of any card I've read over the last year, which admitedly isn't a whole lot of them, but this was big. Loved it. Hits the Rhine Rewind on Lane and everything. Loved it.
Taking the Carpool Lane to Crazytown- Great segment that has my second favorite heel in all of PTC, right now, in Wyatt Connors. I love the negoation at the beginning and then the back and forth between him and Sykes is hilarious. I particularly how Sykes calls him Jay Draven. That actually did make me laugh out loud.
Burn it To The Ground- Short, effective, segment. There isn't anything special, or bad, about this segment. It served its purpose.
Four Corners Strap Match- Ok match up. I figured there would be a bit more to this match, especially with the gimmick, but it was ok. It flowed well. I thought it was a bit short but it was nice to see Bridden win, despite his earlier segment saying he didn't even want to win. Interesting to see him win despite that attitude.
The Jungle Cats...etc (Way to long to type out)- Uhh....ok. I'm not really sure what this segment is going to lead to but it's very, very, very, strange.
Dangerous- Once again Ben delievers when it comes to segment work. I love the way he's playing the lackey and I love how he does all this work and often doesn't even know what he's going to do, from moment to moment, until he actually does it.
I loved the dialogue between them all and I kind of like the potential of Bridden in the group. I also love the way he's going with Jeb, to this point, cause he's handling him just the way i envision right now for the role we came up with Jeb for Lane and SCCW. I love my Stewart character and I love the way Ben's got it going right now.
My only complaint here is the lack of communication between Ben and Nate about the earlier segment cause it kept Ben from selling the fact that Rhine kicked his ass earlier. Generally this would be sold, and sold perfectly, by Ben. Didn't happen this time.
The 2009 Reunion Tour- Interesting segment between Sykes and Desade. It's got an weird feel to it, in that they seem very eerily comfortable with eachother. I like the little fact that there is a history eluded to here and I find it interesting that they're pretty cordial. I'm interested in seeing how much more this continues to build over time.
Pear Pressure....Or Is It?- Is this supposed to say Peer pressure? That's my first thought as I read this segment title. Then I realised I'm an idiot. lol
Very funny segment. I enjoyed it.
Last Man Standing- What a fantasically done match up. Great pacing, kept me guessing all the way through, had an awesome ending, and I've got to say big time congrats to Ben on a hard fought victory. Awesome work. I loved this match up. Best of the show, thus far, easily.
An Update on Jay Draven- Good return to the show for Draven. It's a solid segment and pretty well done in-ring promo. I don't think you need much more from this here as it gives Draven just what he needs in a return.
If We Need To Show the Passage of Time- Meh. It was there. That's really about all I can say about this one.
Jungle Cats thing again- LOL. I don't know why but something about this very random, silly, stuff is already making me smile. I like how they couldn't get through the 'defenses' and had to retreat.
Just One Of The Guys- It was ok. Nothing special but it works well for the characters I suppose. They got what they wanted out of it I'm guessing.
The Elite Title Match- Awesome match up that was extremely well written. I love that Connors has retained, again, and is holding that title on lockdown at this point. Awesome work by Connors and Sykes, congrats to Connors on a very well deserved victory.
Calm Before The Storm- Good to see Lance Marshall make an appearance on this big show finally. Alright segment. Nothing big here. But it works.
Approval- I dont know if there is stuff I've missed prior to this but i don't really understand the point of this segment.
Well Wishes- Perfect job by Ben of selling the earlier match here. This is what I was mentioning earlier. I like the stuff here between Marshall and Stevens. It works great and I could see an awesome feud between these two in the very near future. This segment also has, by far, the line of the night for me and of course it had to come from Lane Stevens. Just amazing what Ben does with this guy.
"Woah there buddy! I just came here to wish you good luck, and you’re talking about snapping necks and…all kinds of crazy crap."
I absolutely loved that line, especially given what Marshall had just said. Great job by these two. Probably my favorite segment of the whole night.
The Dome of Doom- This is the match up I have been waiting for. This is the thing I was most looking forward to when I heard about this card and I'll say this right now...LOVED IT.
This match up lived to absolutely every bit of hype, and wait, I had in waiting on this match up. I loved the concept, I loved how it allowed so many stories to play out, begin, continue, and everything was just great. I loved how this allowed for Spacely to get over in a MAJOR WAY.
Big time props to Joe for using the first loss of Desade, by pinfall or submission, to really help get another character over in a major way. I would imagine not many saw Spacely being the one to get this win which only makes it that much better. I loved that.
HUGE pin for Marshall in this match up. Getting the pinfall on Aimz, winning her half of the tag titles, and putting together an unholy union with Desade is just brilliant. I love the direction that this will have to take with these two absolutely hating one another and how it will play out in the Desade/Aimz partnership. That should be interesting as hell.
Finally what a HUGE win for Katie. 1 year as champion, in any fed, is absolutely outstanding. In one that is as well known, competitive, and deep as this one just speaks even more about how hard she's worked to continue to be the champion and prove it's not a fluke. Congrats on a huge win, a huge run, and just amazing work.
Overall Thoughts-
1. Great overall show. I enjoyed it top to bottom. There was plenty of great stuff on this show and SCCW has, easily, 2 of the top 3 best heels in all of PTC with Connors and Stevens. Stevens being the best and Connors possibly being the second best, only Snow could possibly take that from him, so that's amazing for a fed.
2. Where the hell was Aimz in the lead up to the main event? That was one BIG missing piece. This was a huge night, a huge match, and had a lot of meaning. T here should have been some Aimz, throughout the show, hyping the fact that if she won she would be champion for a year. The ball was dropped here in not getting that done.
3. Lane Stevens is by far my favorite character in any fed, anywhere, hands down. This show showed over and over why he's one of the best ever.
4. Big time night for Spacely by becoming the Gateway Champion.
5. Shame that Sean didn't show up for this big time show. It would have been nice to see some stuff from Kennedy.
Overall I'd give this show an 8.5 or 9 out of 10 pretty easily. Very well done from top to bottom and I absolutely loved, as I mentioned earlier, the highlight replays during matches. All feds should start doing this cause it gives the shows a very, very, real feel. I love that.
