Tonight it was announced that the Philadelphia Eagles have signed Michael Vick to a two year deal.
Now being a Cowboy fan I find that it's my duty to laugh at anything the Eagles do and this one is just one of those things that makes it very easy to laugh at them. Let me get this out there first off. I know it's the in thing, or the cool thing, for people to just assume that as a Cowboys fan when I say I hate the Eagles that I won't give them respect for anything. This isn't true. I do respect their organization because it is a well run team and they've had a list of players who I thought, or do think, are fantastic players. I give them the credit they're due but they are the team I hate more than any team in any sport.
Which is only natural cause they're a rival of my Cowboys. With that out of the way I'll say that I knew all along, as anyone who follows football did, that someone was eventually going to give Vick a shot. You knew it had to happen because while I don't think he's a very good QB, in fact I think as far as being a QB goes he's absolutely terrible, but the guy is an athlete. He can do things that you just can't coach or teach and someone was going to give him that shot.
I was suprised to see it being the Eagles. This is a franchise that has never struck me as the type to really deal with this type of distraction. They've never been the franchise to put players with any type of serious off the field issues on their team. Heck if someone had asked me the Eagles would have been one of the teams on my short list of teams that I would have said there was 0 shot that they'd sign Vick.
So color me a bit surprised. But if you look at it closely, despite the fact that I don't believe McNabb is going to like this move at all, though he'll likely say all the right things to the media and such, it makes some sense. Their backup QB, who really is unproven anyway at this point, is hurt and maybe hurt all year long. They needed a veteran that they could put in there with McNabb and Vick is probably as good as any other option out there right now.
They will no doubt allow him to do some things even though he wont start. He'll likely come in and run some wild cat for them, and maybe line up a bit at WR and such. They'll find a way to use this guys athletic ability.
Now that of course all depends on rather or not the Commish is even going to completely allow him back into the league this year. They could still suspend him for some games at the end of pre-season, so who knows how that is going to go.
With all that said I'll give you my thoughts on Vick in general. I think what he did was disgusting like pretty much everyone else. But I'll grant it that he paid his dues, in the legal system, and if the league allows him to play I will have no bones with that. I said all along if they allowed him to play i wouldnt be bothered by it and if they kept him out for a year, or longer, with a league suspension I wouldn't be upset about it either.
Whatever route they went with I'd be fine with. The guy did his time and if he gets his shot then good for him. I have no issue with it. However with that shot comes all the other stuff. There is going to be the jokes, the signs, the mocking, all that stuff that goes with Vick being back in the spotlight. So I really couldn't care less if Vick, his friends, his family, his fans, fans in general, or whatever are butt hurt over the fact that people bad mouth him, mock him, laugh at him, whatever.
Don't like that? Tough. It's life. The guy is an idiot, a grade A idiot, and he screwed up in a way that is going to follow him for the rest of his life. Don't think that's fair? Well then he shouldn't have been an idiot and got himself into that business then.
Now some will cry and say "well he grew up around it. He didn't know any better. Cut him some slack." To that I'll say bull. I don't care if he grew up around it. So what? That makes it ok to break the laugh and be an idiot? Sorry but that defense won't fly for me.
Or for the hunters and country boys out there, and an ironic twist with Vick, 'that dog won't hunt."
Vick deserves everything he gets from people because he brought it on himself. I don't feel sorry for him and there is no excuse out there that will make me feel sorry for him. These people know it's wrong to do this stuff, and it's illegal, otherwise they wouldn't be trying to do it in secret. So frankly there simply is no defense of someone knowing something is wrong, and stupid, and illegal and still doing it.
That said I don't think Vick is the worst person on earth and certainly not the worst person in the NFL. If Leonard Little can drink and drive, and kill someone, and then after a half year suspension come back into the league, and later get another drunk driving arrest, then Vick can certainly still play in the NFL.
If Dante Stalworth is allowed back into the NFL next season after driving drunk and killing a man then yes Michael Vick can absolutely still be allowed to play football. I find the fact that Dante and Little ever being allowed to play in the NFL disgusting. I find it disgusting that either of them are even walking around free instead of in jail. But I can't control that sort of thing. I don't like it, it shouldn't be allowed, but I wasn't the one making those decisions.
With all that said I'll say good luck to Vick. Keep yourself out of trouble and enjoy your time left in the league. Try not to be a giant moron and forget what a priveledge and honor you have here in playing in the NFL. I'll also say that this will make hating on the Eagles, and their faithful, that much more fun this season.
It's time for the NFL again and I couldn't be more happy. This news only amped up the fun for the season, in my eyes.
